Our Story

James Madison Education Fund, Inc.

The James Madison Education Fund, Inc., or James Madison Fund, started in 1994 with the hope of raising money and awareness regarding the urgent need to educate America’s youth about the U.S. Constitution and the foundational principles of our nation. The concept was a simple one: Teach America’s teachers and you amplify efforts to prepare millions of young Americans to inherit the helm of civic rights and responsibility. The James Madison Fund is a private, non-profit, 501(c)(3) partner organization to the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation, or James Madison Foundation. The James Madison Education Fund, Inc. has no paid employees. All staffing needs for the James Madison Fund are provided pro bono by employees of the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. Board members provide continuous service on a bro bono basis to the James Madison Fund. Board members have not made contributions to the James Madison Fund.

The James Madison Fund’s expenses are fully funded by its current endowment. If the James Madison Fund receives a grant, or endowment, 100% of the funds provided will be used for the expenses of the sponsored program, and not used for overhead expenses.

Ms. Adams was appointed to the Board in 2024; Mr. Alwes and Ms. Iglesias were appointed in 2021. They receive no compensation for their services to the James Madison Fund.

The James Madison Education Fund, Inc. does not have an operating budget or a staff. Office space and office equipment are provided free of charge by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. All staffing needs are provided by the employees of the James Madison Foundation on a pro bono basis.

Permanent Endowment

The James Madison Education Fund, Inc. is an independent, private, non-profit organization founded in 1995 as a partner organization to the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. As the Foundation’s nonprofit partner, the James Madison Education Fund, Inc. generates financial support for the James Madison Foundation’s public programs and mission to encourage study of the United States Constitution, its roots, its formation, its principles, and its development.

For nearly 30 years the James Madison Education Fund, Inc. has grown and financially prospered thanks to its permanent endowment. Capital gifts from philanthropic donors ensure a strong permanent endowment and help to build the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation’s Programs. Only the interest from the principal is expended to support programs, so that these gifts continue in perpetuity, helping to safeguard the James Madison Education Fund, Inc. tradition of excellence against a changing economic climate.

Operating Revenue and Expenses

Operating revenue for the James Madison Education Fund is used to support the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation’s programs and activities. Operating revenue for the James Madison Education Fund does not include corpus funds from the Fund’s permanent endowment. Unused surplus earnings for the endowment are reinvested annually.
